Abstract

Composition of Embedded Systems: Scienti?c and Industrial Issues TheMontereyWorkshopsserieswas initiatedin 1992byDavidHislop withthe purpose of exploring the critical problems associated with cost-effective development of hi- quality software systems. During its 14-year history, the Monterey Workshops have brought together scientists that share a common interest in software development - search serving practical advances in next-generation software-intensive systems. Each year is dedicated to a particular topic of critical importance. In the past years, workshop topics were Networked Systems: Realization of Reliable Systems on Unreliable N- worked Platforms (2005 in Laguna Beach, California), "Software Engineering Tools: Compatibility and Integration" (2004 in Vienna), " Engineering for Embedded S- tems: From Requirements to Implementation"(2003 in Chicago), "Radical Innovations of Software and Systems Engineering in the Future" (2002 in Venice), "Engineering Automation for Software Intensive System Integration" (2001 in Monterey). th The 14 Monterey Workshop was held in Paris, France, during October 16-18, 2006. Context of the 2006 Monterey Workshop Distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems are notoriously hard to design, imp- ment, and validate. The complexity of a typical system found in many critical - plications in civil and military aviation, transportation systems, and medical devices exceeds the capabilities of existing developmentand veri cation technologies. Com- nies spend enormous amounts of time and resources on veri cation and validation of DRE systems they develop and yet, despite their best efforts, hard-to- nd errors show up in deployed products.

Abstract

These are the proceedings of the Eighth Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems (CHES 2006) held in Yokohama, Japan, October 10-13, 2006. The CHES workshophas been sponsored by the International Association for Cryptographic Research (IACR) since 2004. The ?rst and the second CHES workshops were held in Worcester in 1999 and 2000, respectively, followed by Paris in 2001, San Francisco Bay Area in 2002, Cologne in 2003, Boston in 2004 and Edinburgh in 2005. This is the ?rst CHES workshop held in Asia. This year,a totalof 112 paper submissionswerereceived. The reviewprocess was therefore a delicate and challenging task for the Program Committee m- bers. Each paper was carefully read by at least three reviewers, and submissions with a Program Committee member as a (co-)author by at least ?ve reviewers. The review process concluded with a two week Web discussion process which resulted in 32 papers being selected for presentation. Unfortunately, there were a number of good papers that could not be included in the program due to a lack of space. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to CHES 2006. In addition to regular presentations, we were very fortunate to have in the programthreeexcellentinvitedtalksgivenbyKazumaroAoki(NTT)onInteger Factoring Utilizing PC Cluster, Ari Juels (RSA Labs) on The Outer Limits of RFID Security and Ahmad Sadeghi (Ruhr University Bochum) on Challenges for Trusted Computing. The program also included a rump session, chaired by Christof Paar, featuring informal presentations on recent results.

Abstract

Embedded systems are ubiquitous. They appear in cell phones, microwave ovens, refrigerators, consumer electronics, cars, and jets. Some of these embedded s- tems are safety- or security-critical such as in medical equipment, nuclear plants, and X-by-wire control systems in naval, ground and aerospace transportation - hicles. With the continuing shift from hardware to software, embedded systems are increasingly dominated by embedded software. Embedded software is complex. Its engineering inherently involves a mul- disciplinary interplay with the physics of the embedding system or environment. Embedded software also comes in ever larger quantity and diversity. The next generation of premium automobiles will carry around one gigabyte of binary code. The proposed US DDX submarine is e?ectively a ?oating embedded so- ware system, comprising 30 billion lines of code written in over 100 programming languages. Embedded software is expensive. Cost estimates are quoted at around US15- 30 per line (from commencement to shipping). In the defense realm, costs can range up to 100, while for highly critical applications, such as the Space Shuttle, the cost per line approximates 1,000. In view of the exponential increase in complexity, the projected costs of future embedded software are staggering.

Abstract

The design of embedded systems warrants a new perspective because of the following two reasons: Firstly, slow and energy inefficient memory hierarchies have already become the bottleneck of the embedded systems. It is documented in the literature as the memory wall problem. Secondly, the software running on the contemporary embedded devices is becoming increasingly complex. It is also well understood that no silver bullet exists to solve the memory wall problem. Therefore, this book explores a collaborative approach by proposing novel memory hierarchies and software optimization techniques for the optimal utilization of these memory hierarchies. Linking memory architecture design with memory-architecture aware compilation results in fast, energy-efficient and timing predictable memory accesses. The evaluation of the optimization techniques using real-life benchmarks for a single processor system, a multiprocessor system-on-chip (SoC) and for a digital signal processor system, reports significant reductions in the energy consumption and performance improvement of these systems. The book presents a wide range of optimizations, progressively increasing in the complexity of analysis and of memory hierarchies. The final chapter covers optimization techniques for applications consisting of multiple processes found in most modern embedded devices. Advanced Memory Optimization Techniques for Low Power Embedded Processors is designed for researchers, complier writers and embedded system designers / architects who wish to optimize the energy and performance characteristics of the memory subsystem.

Abstract

Embedded systems are meanwhile in the focus of industry in quite different application domains such as automotive, avionics, telecom, and consumer products. The need for a shift in design methodologies towards system level design is widely recognised and design flows aimed to an integration of software and hardware specification and implementation approaches are being developed. Standardization efforts, such as SystemC Transaction Level Modelling and Model Driven Architecture of the OMG, provide the foundations of these new design flows. Design and specification languages are of utmost interest in the area of embedded systems and the Forum on Specification and design Languages has been once again been the main European event for the embedded systems and chip design community. Advances in Design and Specification Languages for Embedded Systems is the latest contribution to the Chip Design Languages series and it consists of selected papers presented at the Forum on Specifications and Design Languages (FDL'06), which took place in September 2006 at Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. FDL, an ECSI conference, is the premier European forum to present research results, to exchange experiences, and to learn about new trends in the application of specification and design languages as well as of associated design and modelling methods and tools for integrated circuits, embedded systems, and heterogeneous systems. Modelling and specification concepts push the development of new methodologies for design and verification to system level, they thus provide the means for a model-driven design of complex information processing systems in a variety of application domains.

Abstract

CHES2007,theninthworkshoponCryptographicHardwareandEmbeddedS- tems, was sponsored by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) and held in Vienna, Austria, September 10-13, 2007. The workshop - ceived 99 submissions from 24 countries, of which the Program Committee (39 members from 15 countries) selected 31 for presentation. For the ?rst time in the history of CHES, each submission was reviewed by at least four reviewers instead of three (and at least ?ve for submissions by PC members, those now being limited to two per member) and many submitted papers have received plenty of extra reviews (some papers received up to nine reviews), thus totalling the unprecedented record of 483 reviews overall. Thepaperscollectedinthisvolumerepresentcutting-edgeworldwideresearch in the rapidly evolving ?elds of crypto-hardware, fault-based and side-channel cryptanalysis, and embedded cryptography, at the crossing of academic and - dustrial research. The wide diversity of subjects appearing in these proceedings covers virtually all related areas and shows our e?orts to extend the scope of CHES more than usual. Although a relatively young workshop, CHES is now ?rmlyestablishedasascienti?ceventofreferenceappreciatedbymoreandmore renowned experts of theory and practice: many high-quality works were subm- ted, all of which, sadly, could not be accepted. Selecting from so many good worksis no easy task and our deepest thanks go to the members of the Program Committee for their involvement, excellence, and team spirit. We are grateful to the numerous external reviewers listed below for their expertise and assistance in our deliberations.
